The Institute of Genetics was established in 1961 by Professor Jiazhen Tan (C.C. Tan) who was a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In August 1956, at the Genetics Conference at Qingdao, it was decided to establish a genetics laboratory at Fudan University. This was the predecessor of the Institute of Genetics. Since Prof. Tan, other directors include Professor Shouyuan Zhao and Professor Yuming Mao. There are currently 15 professors and 23 associate professors. The main focuses of the institute are (a) functional genomics, and (b) basic and applied researches in genetic engineering. The research areas include human genetics, medical genetics, genetic engineering, population and evolution genetics, plant molecular genetics, and microbial molecular genetics.
