Glossary of Genetics:
The Audio Glossary of Genetics is a learning tool designed by the Office of Science Outreach and Education in the Division of Intramural Research (DIR) at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NHGRI oversees the NIH's role in the Human Genome Project, an international research effort aimed at developing tools for gene discovery. Many of the glossary terms are commonly used today-in news reports; by researchers and medical professionals; in classrooms; and, increasingly, as part of daily conversations about new discoveries and possibilities resulting from the Human Genome Project. In this light, it is our hope the glossary will enable people with non-scientific backgrounds to better understand the terms and concepts behind genetic research. The glossary is designed to be used with ease by students, teachers, and parents as an "always available" learning source relating to genetics. Written
Definitions
Each glossary entry has a written definition that has been reviewed for clarity and accuracy by both science communicators and genetic researchers. Phonetic Spellings and Illustrations: Nearly all glossary entries have a phonetic spelling to help sound out the word for use in conversation. Many terms also have professionally drawn illustrations to further explain a meaning or concept. Each of the illustrations can be viewed as a web page, or as a high-quality printable PDF file. Spoken Explanations of Glossary Terms: Each listing comes with a friendly and informative explanation that can be heard using the RealAudio Player (a free version of the RealAudio Player is available on this CD). Each speaker comments on, or defines, terms that are relevant to their field of study. For example: leading cancer researchers comment on cancer, genetic counselors explain ethical terms, and expert gene hunters tackle the many terms surrounding the search for genes. Information On Each Scientist: To learn more about the person explaining the term, simply click on their highlighted name. This hyperlink will take you to their web page where you can learn more about their background. The good news is that you can also do this while you listen to the audio explanation. If either the written or spoken definition uses other genetic terms in its text or dialogue, these terms will appear as hyperlinks in the "related terms" listing. Hearing the audio explanations of the genetic terms requires only that your computer has the ability to play a sound file. A RealAudio Player is also needed and available in either the Windows/Mac folder on this CD. PDF files, or portable document format files, are high quality image files that appear and print like the original artwork. These files are complete with fonts and finely detailed illustrations. They also feature fast download times. PDF files can also be downloaded and saved for later uses such as overhead transparencies, in a school report or as teaching tools. Each file is the size of a regular piece of printer paper or a standard overhead transparency. A PDF viewer is available in either the Windows/Mac folder on this CD.
